Annual Consumer Christmas Party Times and Dates
Dec 10, 10 A.M., Gift wrapping at the NAMI Shoals office
Dec 11, 6 P.M., Decorating and assumbly of gifts at Cross Point Church of
Christ on Cox Creek Parkway. Bring "finger foods" to share before work
begins.
Dec 12, 12 Noon, Serving of the Consumer's Christmas Feast will begin at
Cross Point Church of Christ on Cox Creek Parkway. (Those bringing food, please
have it at the church by 10:30 A.M.
Bipolar and Depression Support Group:
Meets on the 1st Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at our office.
Family
To Family Support Group: Meets
on the 2nd Tuesday of each month, 7:00 - 8:30 P.M. with trained family facilitators. This group is
for all ages -- for families,
and friends and significant others of consumers. It is a support,
sharing and caring type meeting.
Regular
Board Meeting: 3rd Tuesday of each month, 6:30 P.M. at the NAMI
Shoals Office at 749 Thompson Street Suite-A (see
map)
Monthly
Educational Meeting: 4th
Tuesday of each month at the NAMI office, at 7 P.M.
featuring a variety of speakers from different agencies as well as
psychiatrists from the Riverbend outpatient mental health clinic and
from private practice.

Sharing Group For Mental Health Consumers: 1st and 3rd
Sunday of each month 2:00 - 3:30
P.M. at North Wood United Methodist Church

Meetings, Classes and
Seminars
August 11: NAMI Family-to-Family 12 week classes for relatives of adults with serious mental illness: Thursday, August 13, 7-9:30 P.M. at NAMI Shoals office, 749 Thompson St., Florence. 765-2081
August 8: NAMI Shoals is sponsoring NAMI Basics, a
series of 6 weekly classes, for parents and other caregivers of children and
adolescents 6-8:30 P.M. on Tuesdays, beginning August 18 at Crosspoint
Church of Christ, Cox Creek Parkway, Florence in the recreation and outreach
center building. Call 765-2081 (NAMI Shoals office) to be placed on the list.
The classes are free.
The classes will be taught by trained family co-teachers, Mary Arny and Loresa
Stanfield who are themselves parents. Resource/support person will be Sharon
Wright who has taught previous classes for caregivers of children/adolescents.
The classes cover the illnesses of ADHD, major depression, bipolar disorder,
conduct disorder, oppositional disorder, anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive
disorder, schizophrenia, autistic spectrum disorders, and substance abuse. Coping
skills such as handling crisis and relapse, basic information about behaviors,
listening and communication techniques, problem solving skills, overviews of the
mental health systems, school systems, juvenile justice systems. the curriculum
was written by an experienced family member in the mental health profession.
Family-to-Family 12-Week Course
The next Family-to-Family 12 Week Educational Course will next be
offered starting August 27th. The class meets
weekly for
twelve consecutive weeks from 7 to 9:30 P.M. in the meeting
room at our office on Thompson Street. These classes are for families
of adults 18 and older who have schizophrenia, schizoaffective
disorder, bipolar disorder, major depression, obsessive-compulsive
disorder, panic disorder, and borderline disorder. It also covers
dual diagnoses of one of the above illnesses and substance abuse. For
